It's also fairly rugged and can take the odd knock so no complaints there. I think for cyclists and mountaineers and seamen this may be better suited where you're more likely to be around open skies. The toggle/nipple thing is used for typing and entering which is frustrating given that technology in this century is beyond that. Annoying for finding caches! Not to say that it's useless though, just a basic starting model. It's accuracy can be a little off sometimes and can lose signal easily in light tree cover and occasionally in cars. The item is waterproof and can be backlit in poor light.
But, now that i know this little hobby of mine is actually quite fun, i may have to upgrade soon. I felt that investing in an expensive colour model with hundreds of features may not be viable in case i a) find i didn't like geocaching that much and b) didn't think i would use it that much.
RS-232 connector (female, 9 or 25 pins as needed) with housing if possible. I bought this basic older model for Geocaching. To modify it for Garmin eTrex power supply with serial connector and add some protection, you need to spend about 2 for additional parts. Average and sturdy basic model to start you off in the GPS world.
